WPC Members Evening 17th November – Practical Macro Photography Night.
(or the art of taking close ups of small objects)
The plan is to start the evening with a quick demonstration from Bill Salkeld of mostly DIY aids and accessories for macrophotography.
This will include lens accessories and improvised lens alternatives to a macro lens. Table top back grounds and lighting will also be featured. (Some of these items will be available for members to use during the second half of the evening if needed).
If you have any of your own favourite similar items which you would like to show members, please feel free to bring them along.
We hope to have an early tea break and for the second half we split down into groups, each then setting up a table and photographing any suitable small items that you have brought along. (nothing too precious please as usually others may wish to try your subject).
Hopefully we will have some more experienced members scattered within the groups who will be happy to show others the basics.
Here are some suggestions as to what you might need to bring along;
- Some small items to photograph. Most important!
- Camera / charged batteries
- Macro lens or Kit Zooms.
- Any close up accessories you may have. (close up filters, extension tubes, teleconverter, large magnifying glass, Bellows?
- Tripod/s
- Light stands
- Portable lighting (power points are limited!) i.e. LED panels, flash, torches, ring-lights or ???
- Spare charged batteries / power bank for above
- Coloured gels for lights?
- Background stands, white and coloured background paper/ cloth / boards
- Phone tripod clamp ( phones often do macro very well, test their limits?)
- Imagination and creativity
- Remote/cable shutter release
We recently enjoyed an excellent talk on Macro from Tony North, this evening should reveal a few lessons on what to do/not to do if you wish to emulate his work.
Remember we have a Macro themed competition in January.
Any questions and suggestions are welcome.
Bill Salkeld.
