A word from the Chairman

Our first AGM will take place on April 23rd.  As this is our first AGM, things may take a little longer than previously as it is a good time to review where we are, and where we are going - and we have a financial report as well.

As far as where are we going, we are in urgent need of additional committee members particularly to act as programme secretary and external competition secretary.  This club has fantastic support generally however it now need you to step up and help to ensure its continued success!

Adrian has sent the following:

"This is advance notice of the club’s AGM which will be held on April 23rd. If you have any proposals or agenda items these should be sent to me by no later than April 9th."

Please contact him via email, if you don't have his email please contact secretary@wilmslowphotoclub.org.uk

After the AGM business have concluded, we will have a mentoring group discussion.

On May 7th, we have the people's choice competition.  There will be two sections - colour and mono and you can enter one image in each.  We are hoping to allow you to view the images in advance of the meetings, and you can vote for your favourites on the night.  Any image is allowed so now if the chance to give that image the credit it deserves. You can enter your images now on PhotoEntry (under the single competition section) or perhaps you want to discuss your images at the mentoring session.

That's it for now, have a Happy Easter

Guest Speaker

Kieran Metcalfe - Chasing the  light

Chasing the Light – looks at photographing in different weather / lighting conditions. Starting from the a realisation that light is crucial to engagement with a landscape photograph, Kieran will discuss the conditions he actively seeks, the joys and pitfalls they bring and how sometimes, his favourite images are ones taken in less-than-ideal or unexpected situations. As well as telling the stories behind a few of his images, he also unpacks the processes he uses both in the field and in the edit.

You can find more on Kieran from his website.

Project Group

The next theme chosen for the 16th April was, Weathering.

As we could not decide on a second theme we resorted to a randomly chosen card ( from the pack of photo themes that no one wants to do).  They represent more of a challenge than usual. Card No 28 reads; Make something, photograph it, then photograph its destruction.

This one may initially not appeal to many but given some thought there is a lot of scope here for creative thinking, story telling, improvisation and using the less familiar features of your camera. Don’t dismiss it out of hand, please give it a go. Learning and stretching boundaries is what the group is all about after all.

There is no fixed limit on the number of entries for each theme and sizing does not really matter. Please put your own interpretation on the theme.

There is an additional subject to the next Project meeting.

Project Group - Additional Seasonal theme!

Following some feedback, the group executive has decided to include an extra alternative theme for 16th April meeting.

The theme is Spring- straight from the camera. This means that maybe apart from sizing, images should have no other external editing.

This is an excellent opportunity to experiment with the effects of exposure compensation and the built in Art type and other modes that most cameras have.

Martin Parr is a chronicler of our age. In the face of the constantly growing flood of images released by the media, his photographs offer us the opportunity to see the world from his unique perspective.

At first glance, his photographs seem exaggerated or even grotesque. The motifs he chooses are strange, the colours are garish and the perspectives are unusual. Parr's term for the overwhelming power of published images is "propaganda". He counters this propaganda with his own chosen weapons: criticism, seduction and humour. As a result, his photographs are original and entertaining, accessible and understandable. But at the same time they show us in a penetrating way that we live, how we present ourselves to others, and what we value.

Martin Parr is one of the best-known documentary photographers of his generation. With over 100 books of his own published, and another 30 edited by Parr, his photographic legacy is already established.

Parr also acts as a curator and editor. He has curated two photography festivals, Arles in 2004 and Brighton Biennial in 2010. More recently Parr curated the Barbican exhibition, Strange and Familiar.

Parr has been a member of the Magnum agency since 1994 and was President from 2013 - 2017. In 2013 Parr was appointed the visiting professor of photography at the University of Ulster.

Parr’s work has been collected by many of the major museums, from the Tate, the Pompidou and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Martin Parr established the Martin Parr Foundation in 2017.
