Our editor has given a report for last week's excellent speaker below.  One of the benefits of using Zoom is that we are able to listen to speakers from around the globe such as Stephanie.  

So I'm looking forward to you stepping forward to act on the committee as either treasurer or to organise external speakers so we can continue with these talks in the future.

Guest speaker Stephanie Johnson

This week we had the pleasure of hosting via Zoom the fantastic ICM photographer Stephanie Johnson all the way from Iowa, USA.

This was a imaginative and thought provoking talk on the art of "In camera movement" or better known as ICM. Stephanie's enthusiasm for ICM photography showed through as she demonstrated, through her art, the many technics she has perfected over the years.

From the Editor

On a personal note, the talk by Stephanie rekindled my love of ICM photography, so here is a couple of images I produced this week. Both were taken on very bright sunny morning in harsh light, i stepped the aperture down to f32 on my Pentax 250-60 zoom to achieve a shutter speed of 1/4 sec. They were both in camera multi  exposures of 4 images. I then carried out some basic adjustments in Lightroom, then sent them into PS. I duplicated the images four times. I then altered the blend modes and used the transform tool to manoeuvre the layers until I like the composition. I have added the out of camera files first, then the final edits, enjoy.

It just goes to show how a good talk can inspire you to go out and just create.

Next week we have two events. The fist is the first Cheadle Alliance Competition. This is to be held at Bramhall Photographic Club, the time of the start is 19:45. The address for those wishing to support our members whose images have been selected to represent WPC is below.

The second event is the first Project group meeting of the year.

As a reminder here are the details from Bill

For that event, the following themes were chosen:-

1. Tree Triptych.  In the photo club world the usual triptych is a set of 3 associated images presented as a single print or, as in our case as a single DPI. It therefore becomes both a photographic and processing challenge. The trees can be whole or parts and up to about 6 DPIs will be acceptable.  (many Olympus cameras can produce 3 images on one frame in camera, no doubt others can as well as some phones with apps?)

And/or 

2. Feet.  (or did Phil mean feat???)  Is this too easy or not?  Let us see how your imagination can be stretched to create some stand out images……….. 

As usual the idea of this Group is to give you a purpose to take some fresh images on your camera and perhaps learn new photographic and processing skills. Put your own interpretation on the theme and create a presentation to last up to about 5 minutes.  

As it is not a competition there is no need to specially size your images and remember to put them on a memory stick which contains nothing else but one folder for each theme that you are entering.

Post Processing is an essential part of the image making process and from my experience it is often the area that lets clients down. What started out as a great raw file with lots of potential hasn’t achieved it’s full impact. We have all seen ‘overprocessed’ or ‘oversharpened’ images and cringe but it needs careful use of the tools at our disposal to ensure that this doesn’t happen to our own photos. The aim of the Post Processing session, whether it be a day here in Preston or delivered via Zoom, is to firstly run through a possible workflow and discuss how it might be similar/different to your current practice. As we all know there are many ways of achieving the same thing in Photoshop or Lightroom and what works for one person might not work for another. Typically, clients book a post processing session at the same time as a workshop. This has the advantage that we can set the date, but I also offer a discount to those clients who book the post processing session at the same time as the workshop. If the session is held at my home in Preston the client would bring up to 15 raw files taken on the workshop. If it is held remotely then the client would upload them to me using a site such as ‘WeTransfer’ or something similar. Each image would be processed in turn, I would demonstrate my techniques and then the client would practice the methods on one of my PC’s , their laptop or by sharing their screen over Zoom. Post Processing Workshop Colin Jarvis (MA Photo, FD Photo, PGCE, ARPS) is a professional landscape photographer based in the North West of England. He has worked as a photographer and educator for many years and his work has been featured in books and magazines as well as exhibited in London, Liverpool and Manchester in private exhibitions and in association with the Royal Institute of British Architects. He is a skilled practitioner in both digital and large format film photography and has taught Photography in both colleges and schools and lectured at Photographic Societies. He holds a Master of Arts in Photography and is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society. He has appeared in the Landscape Photographer of the Year book and subsequent exhibition as well as in a number of photography journals. Colin runs residential workshops to some of the most beautiful areas of the UK including Northumberland, Glencoe, Skye and North Wales, along with specialised weekend workshops covering Infrared photography, Long exposure photography and Monochrome masterclasses.
