A word from the Chairman

Some of you may have heard me mention I listen to the Photowalk podcast. The most recent episode introduced me to the food photographer, Henry Hargreaves. Henry is from New Zealand but now lives in the US. He has several excellent personal projects including one entitled No Seconds. This is a still life project where he's recreated the last meal of death row prisoners before their execution. This and his other projects are well worth a look, and if you want to hear an interview with Henry then listen to this episode of the Photowalk either on the website or on your favourite podcast player.

That's all from me for now, hope to see you at next week's meeting.

Inspirational quotes

“Twelve significant photographs in any one year is a good crop.”

Ansel Adams

Not every photograph you take is going to be a keeper, and you’re not going to like them all. As a photographer it’s important to have the ability to see the true beauty of a shot, recognise imperfections as potential assets and learn to look at your captures objectively.

Jenny Varley

Our Guest speaker this week was the fantastic wildlife photographer

Jenny loves travelling, nature and wild places, and is passionate about the environment.  Her talk covered hints and tips for wildlife photography including planning and some case studies

Jenny's passion for wildlife photography was evident in the amazing images she shared with us. Jenny shared many of the tips and some tricks in how she captured the many images she showed to us.

We were amazed by the the many varied species of animals, and included some of the most rarest of creatures. Jenny shared such animals as Jaguars from the Pantanal to Albatross in the Falkland islands. There were cute Polar bears from Canada and wild Wolves in Finland. This is just a fraction of the wildlife Jenny has captured on her many safaris throughout the world.

There was special part of the talk which focused on the rarest of the African cat family, the black jaguar. Jenny was very forthcoming when asked the many questions from the audience.

All in all it was a very interesting and entertaining evening thanks to Jenny and her enthusiasm for wildlife photography.

You can see many of Jenny's images on her website

Next Meeting

Project Group

Our next meeting is a project group meeting. As we all know the project group is a non competitive group within WPC. This is were members, and newcomers can bring along images to show the group. Valuable comments, and if asked for critique can be gleaned to possible improve there images, or just bring along an image to show your fellow photographers. So bring along you image on the  usual memory stick

1.' What I did over the summer’  This is quite open,  it could be for example a (few) holiday images, a Personal Project (if you do not have one, why not?) , your first experiences with a new camera or lens, some experiments with software and post processing  or ????????……………. it's up to you!

2. ‘Long Exposure’  By this we are looking at exposures of one second or longer. It could be light trails in the dark, filtered flattened seascapes, multiple exposures, on a tripod or not? ICM.  Phone users may have more of a challenge, does it mean a new app?  Whichever camera you use its an opportunity to try something different , out of your usual photographic comfort zone.

Competition Week 19th Nov 2024

This is the first Print of the season

Don't forget the deadline for the next competition is looming. The final hand in date is the 5th November, But i have been reliably informed this is not set in stone. You are really leaving it to the last chance saloon by the 12th November.

Please ensure that all your entries have been uploaded into PhotoEntry ASAP, so this gives the Competition secretary time to compile the competition in DiCentra.

Smartphone Challenge 2024

We are running a member voted smartphone competition on 12th November.  The competition has been created on PhotoEntry in the single competition section so you can upload an image now!  Entries will close a week before so we can share them to all members prior to the meeting on Tuesday.

We’ve set PhotoEntry to downsize any oversize entries and to allow any colour profile.  This should allow you to upload directly from your phone. We have not tested how images resizing by PhotoEntry and with a different colorspace will be projected so it’s up to you to decide if you feel lucky, well do you? (to paraphrase Dirty Harry).

Voting will be in-person only – no postal (or email) votes. So now’s your chance to re-arrange things/cancel holidays so you come and vote!
